WORLD ASSOCIATION FOR SEXUAL HEALTH RAISES CONCERN WITH NEW LITHUANIAN LAW
JUNE 25, 2009, GOTEBORG, SWEDEN: The World Association for Sexual Health (WAS), meeting here today, released a statement to the Lithuanian Parliament. Dr. Rosemary Coates, president of WAS, read the following statement to the 900 sexual health professionals attending the Congress from around the world:
“The World Association for Sexual Health has learned that the Lithuanian Parliament recently adopted a law that considers information associated with homosexuality as one of the types of information that has detrimental effects on minors.
WAS wishes to express its profound concern in regard to this decision. Science has demonstrated that homosexuality and bisexuality are not determined by the information received during child development. Likewise, there is ample evidence to show that the lack of accurate and appropriate information about human sexuality makes children vulnerable to problems and personal distress. Therefore, WAS states that the adopted law is based on erroneous assumptions about child sexual development, and it may result in considerable damage for the healthy development of children. This law, which is a breach of fundamental human rights, is discriminatory and potentially damaging to families and society.
WAS is a scientific organization dedicated to disseminate information based on scientific evidence and feels compelled to comment on this recently adopted law, and does not attempt to intervene in internal affairs of nations.
